K9 Arts and Culture

Who Said Learning Wasn’t Fun? Certainly not the staff at K9 Community College!

Our Arts programs are a great way for both you and your dog to create lasting memories together.  Some of our most popular "Doggy Art Outings" include our paw painting and sculpturing classes.  “Unleash” your dog’s creative side while having fun and socializing with other dog owners. Your dog's paw paintings and doggie sculptures really make a great and unique gift for friends and family!

Additionally, our Games programs are designed to not only teach and train your dog new commands and obedience skills but also important social interaction techniques.  These great programs also give you (the owner) a chance to play with your dog in a social setting alongside other dog owners.

Some games we play in our Arts and Culture Program include;

“Dress for Success” – A relay race… with a twist! Two equal teams are split up with the same amount of big and small dogs on each team.  In the center of the floor is a pile of clothing consisting of 20 different shirts of various sizes, 20 different socks and 20 different hats.  At the starting cue a player from each team races out and tries to find the clothes that will fit their dog.  The player races back to their side’s starting line so the next dog can go.  The first team that gets all of it’s “players” dressed wins the game.  Be sure to bring your camera for this game!

Tic-Tac-Toe – A large tic-tac-toe board is drawn on the pavement and two teams are divided up into “X’s” and “O’s” The “X” team is referred to as the “Sits” while the “O” team are the “Downs”.  The first team Captain decides where to put their “X” and sends one of their players out to that spot first.  Then the “O” team Captain decides where to put their team member is a “Down” position. Players continue to fill the squares with X’s and O’s until one team gets three in a row, or it’s a draw.  A great way to teach your dog to remain in a sit or down position in the presence of other dogs.

Musical Chairs – A great twist on the classic game we all played as kids.  When the music stops handlers must find an empty chair and have their dogs lie down.  If the dog pops up, the handler must give up their chair go to the dog and have them lie down again.  No one is allowed to sit in a chair unless the dog which belongs to them have their elbows on the ground.  We play three different versions of this game (each based on the skill levels of the dogs participating).  A great fast-paced way to help teach your dog to look to you for instruction and guidance.

The Tail Wagging Game – Two teams line up on opposite sides of the room with the people facing toward the middle and their dogs facing them, with their tails toward the middle.  Teams are asked to pick “Fruits” or “Vegetables”. Whatever they pick they must not utter any sounds except for the name of the fruit or vegetables. The object of the game is to get your dog the happiest with just the use of your voice.  You need to strictly use the name of the fruit or vegetable in order to do it – no other “real” words are allowed. Whichever team has the best “wagers” wins.  Although, sometimes a “wag off” is necessary in order to determine the champion.  No wagering, please.
